Week 20: Sticks and stones

I think the theory of reincarnation goes something like this: if you're a good person, say your prayers every day, never steal, lie, or cheat, do for others, and never ask for a thing in return, when you die, you'll come back as a University of Georgia freshman during football season.
If you don't, when you die, you'll come back as a perpetually pregnant woman on the evening news, and everyone can share their opinions on what you look like over dinner.

Okay, this analogy is a little extreme, but you get the point. Being pregnant is already one of the most emotional, insecure times of your life. Am I gaining too much weight? Am I gaining enough weight? Is my bump too high? Is my bump too low? Are these breakouts ever going to end? Is this pregnancy making my hair dull? Why are my nail beds doing this weird thing?

Now, throw yourself in front of a camera that adds 20 pounds every night, find clothes that not only fit, but also don't make you look like a whale, and cake on enough hair and makeup products twice a day to moonlight as a Las Vegas showgirl, and you'll understand where I'm coming from.

Most days, nothing would please me more than staying in my stretchy maternity yoga pants, not a hint of makeup on my face, a bucket of fried chicken in my lap, watching Gossip Girl reruns, trying to calculate the last day I washed my hair like it's an advanced Calculus equation.

But, I picked a career that doesn't exactly allow for that. There are no 'ponytail' days. Don't get me wrong. I love my job. Absolutely love it. My husband once told my boss, every night when I come home, and he asks how my day was, more days than not, I say, "It was so great!" Not, "I survived," or "Ughh...don't even ask," but 'GREAT.' He told her as long as that was the case, he would do everything he could to support my career since I loved it so much. (Yes, ladies...he's real. And, he's taken...)

BUT, that doesn't mean I don't have bad work days.

Yesterday, was a bad work day. I checked my voicemail (hoping it was a great story tip...) No such luck. Instead, I heard this peach of a woman on the other end.
"Please go to Target and buy some decent maternity clothes so you don't walk around looking like you got a watermelon strapped under your too tight outfits. Target's got a great line of maternity clothes in case you've never heard of such a thing. You're getting to where you're being disgusting on the TV."

So, the thick skinned journalist in me who knows better than to give comments like this a second thought says, delete the voicemail and move on.

Unfortunately, I'm pregnant, hormonal, currently not allowed to drink wine, and feeling extra in touch with my feminist side.

Here's the stream of consciousness I went through:

Did she just call a pregnant person disgusting? What kind of...
I am only at week 20 of this? Am I going to have to deal with this crap another 20 weeks? Should I have my consultant or my boss call her and tell her tailored, form fitting clothes look way better on air than baggy ones, especially when pregnant? Is that a WOMAN who called me?!? Is she a MOTHER?!?!? The freaking nerve...
Do I really look disgusting? What outfit is she talking about? Why did she call on Friday, I wasn't even working Friday....did she boil over this all week and wait until I was off to leave me a voicemail? Oh crap, am I tearing up at my desk? NOT here. And, NOT over this. This lady doesn't deserve to get a rise out of  me. Does she know that I'm wearing maternity clothes? What does she want me to wear, a moo moo from the 50's? Does she know this is 2017? WHY DID SHE CALL ME?! And, why can I not stop thinking about this?! Hmm...bless her heart...

So then, I went to our archives to see what could have possibly revolted her enough to find our number, call us, sit through a phone tree, find my extension, and leave me a rude voicemail. Here's my past week's worth of on-air outfits:
Most of the time, I keep my hands crossed in front of my belly.
Maybe she doesn't like when I stand at the wall??

This angle, I move my arms out of the way of the bump...maybe this?

You get the picture. But, this lady really got me thinking...

I consider myself a confident, pretty secure, independent, woman. Why was I letting this one ridiculous, negative comment ruin my whole day? I've gotten dozens of compliments from viewers saying nice things about my pregnancy, why was this the one that stuck?

I don't really have an answer. If I did, I could probably solve the world's bullying problem. But, that whole saying our moms taught us about sticks and stones is kind of garbage. In fact, sometimes, I think words hurt far worse than sticks. And right now, we are living in a culture tolerating, often even encouraging bullies. Politicians, angry Democrats and Republicans, anonymous keyboard warriors, social media bullies....How do we teach our kids to be kind when adults all around them can say such cruel things?

It worries me. Right now, I can protect this sweet little boy. But, I won't always be able to. I certainly don't want him to dwell on the negative things insecure people are bound to say about him.

So, I think instead of letting this lady get me down, I'm just going to turn her negative energy into positive energy. I'm going to say as many nice things as I can to as many people as I can, and I'm going to do it in a dress that fits these beautiful new curves with my 'watermelon' stomach showing.

I remember our local news journalist, Donna Deegan, going through her breast cancer treatments, not once, not twice, but three separate times, and instead of worrying about how sick she looked I as blown away for her bravery at kicking cancer's ass and taking it's name. I am honored that each and every one of you chose your profession to share with us and thank you, it cannot be easy knowing that there are trolls out there like this that critized your looks, your dialect, each and every aspect about you, but thank you for not letting them keep you from putting that aside and brining us news and investigations that are important to our lives.

    6. I think, my dear, that what we have here is an elderly woman who has lost her grip on life and most definitely her tact. I have worked with many of these types of women and they come from an era where maybe it was appropriate to cover the wonder of life growing inside of you. Please do not allow this to take up space in your head anymore! You are already a great mother! Your words confirm that. Pray for this lost soul and those like her. I am no Bible thumper but something has to be wrong with a person that would go to such great lengths to contact you about this. You are a BEAUTIFUL young lady! And the classy way that you handled this even shows that your beauty isn't skin deep. We appreciate your work and very soon that baby boy will too. Stay positive, he needs your attention more than this foolishness.

    9. it's impossible to ever understand what motivates an unhappy person to lash out... why you? You're easy to identify, and you look happy. It's a true sip of poison to some people to see a vibrant, happy woman ESPECIALLY during pregnancy. These particular people have never been happy, and they often don't comprehend they are their own worst enemies and the root of their own misery... so they share it... often.... hatefully, in ways designed to destroy the smiles on others, to break the peace in a persons' heart and soul.
Embrace that smile you have daily, enjoy that baby and the bump (you're just darned cute!) and relax knowing fixing THEIR issues isn't on your plate, you just take care of you and yours and let the rest of the world rock on... Blessings.

She just a stupid old woman that has nothing better to do than find fault in others to make herself feel better, when what She needs to do is look in a mirror before she judges anyone else cause it sounds to me like she doesn't have a tooth in her head and could use some dentures. You are dressed very appropriate for your job. You should make it a point to show off your outfit every evening just to make her skin crawl.

      Delete
    13. I was thinking the same thing that it did not sound like she had any teeth to be proud of. Your belly is probably a lot smaller than hers, and she is not even holding a beautiful life inside of her. Be proud of yourself knowing you look healthy and beautiful!

I have 2 sons, age 21 and 16, and pregnancy was a difficult time for me with severe migraines but it was also a happy, blessed time and one with cherished memories ! This woman is probably jealous and if she is a mother, I feel sorry for her children. I wish I had found such beautiful maternity clothes as you and had the confidence to have worn them. My work maternity clothes looked like sacks and were most unflattering . Even so, to me there is nothing more beautiful than a glowing, happy , health Mother - to - be.

    21. 39 with four kids here, and please accept this online hug since I can't hug you in person! I enjoy retro fashion but I dislike how maternity clothes in previous times often seemed to be designed to disguise the mother's changing body rather than accommodate her new figure while allowing her to comfortably move and do everything she normally would.

There is nothing remotely wrong with Laura's classy outfits and it serves no good to "disguise" a pregnancy, unless maybe if you're an actress portraying a character who is decidedly not pregnant. :)

We don't ask girls and women who are menstruating to recede from society until their "condition" resolves itself, so I feel bad for someone who feels that uncomfortable seeing a pregnant woman on television when it's 2017.

Secondly, and back the the first one, you are pregnant, you are growing a human...and you are beautiful!! I would suggest that you get in touch with your inner TSwift and "shake it off". Some people don't have anything better to do then to stir the pot and try to cause crazy in other people's lives. She probably did it on Friday because she knew you were not working. We all need to pray that this woman who made this extremely rude call can find what it is that she needs to make her truly happy within and will feel terrible for her remarks. And I will pray that you will have a safe and happy pregnancy. Forget about the kooks and what they might say and know that you are a beautiful person and that you have a wonderful miracle developing in you...and that is such a blessing.

  75. As a mom of two (ages 15 & 11), I have a few "mantras" that are repeated constantly in this household. "Hurting people hurt people." and "Just because someone says it, doesn't mean it's true." I think both of my kids can say that last one even in their sleep! Unfortunately, many people are rude and simply don't care how much their unkind words hurt. What a great lesson you now have to teach your son about how to deal with situations like this. Because, unfortunately, it will happen. I always tell my children, think on the things that are TRUE. And then don't let those negative, cruel words take up residence in your mind! Blessings on the rest of your pregnancy!

However let me leave you with this small piece of advice that was once given to me when I struggled with this very thing. The longer you let them rent space in your mind the harder it is to evict them. Keep continuing to let her comment go as it comes back in your mind and remind yourself that this is a season and you are growing a precious little boy. Imagine his face, his toes, his eyes and continue to focus on the positive and that will be what gets you through the crazy of being in the public eye. You are so beautiful and I love seeing your baby bump

So I'm not sure how many of these comments you have been able to read but I'm breezing through them and I think it's beautiful that so many people and not just mothers, are rallying together to bring you words of encouragement. It's moving. Shame to the unhappy souls who feel the need to go out of their way to rain their negativity and bitterness amongst others. You do you. You are Beautiful. And I'll pray that somehow these comments make their way back to that unhappy soul and hopefully, just maybe shed some light on the fact that she needs to work on herself. She should probably start by opening a bible, 'not sure if she's familiar with such a thing, but she's being a disgusting human being.' (Sorry I had to lol). By the way I enjoyed reading your article. Love your style of writing.

  108. You look like a perfectly pregnant woman, and shouldn't feel the need to try to change your appearance to please a random viewer who happens to be well-acquainted with merchandise at Target. The caller may have been a member of an oviparous species, possibly a Kentucky Wild Turkey, and their rudeness could be attributed to their unfamiliarity with the idiosyncrasies of human reproduction. The caller did, after all, seem to be struggling with human speech. All the best to you!

I seem to remember when I was pregnant I always felt like I looked like a beached whale. you look lovely and you wear pregnancy vey well. I have to wonder if this woman has actually had to buy maternity clothes in recent years. What's available now is fitted and designed to show off the baby bump as women are reveling more in the amazing experience of motherhood. I'll pray for you to have a happy and healthy pregnancy. I don't even get your news station where I live but several of or anchors and meteorologists have gone through pregnancy on air ave we've followed their Facebook's for when their baby's came along. We love you Laura, don't change. ❤️

  141. The caller sounded like a dumb redneck. And it does take us back to a more ignorant time. We as women should be PROUD that we no longer have to fight for the right to work while expecting, and that every body on everybody is beautiful! You have been in my prayers since your miscarriage. My daughter is carrying, too, and she gets nothing but compliments as she blossoms. This woman is either jealous or narrow-minded. Either way, she is not a happy soul, so don't let her pitiful life suck the joy out of yours. She is way in the minority on her sad opinion. I hope she sees my comment and responds!

Creating the life inside of you will feel like the single most and greatest accomplishment of your life. This ignorant lady will just be a speck of dirt on your rear view mirror in the grand scheme of things. I had my 7 year old at 33 and my 1 year old at 39... yikes, talk about insecurity and body image! Then you get to a point that you realize there are more important things in life to worry about :) best of luck always to you and your husband and thank you for standing up to a bully!

  144. OMG, Laura, the woman is obviously uneducated and has no life. To tell someone to go to Target is only one step above Walmart, and (IMHO) the mindset of someone who has no class or manners. Why a woman would say such a thing to a pregnant woman is beyond my comprehension. You just keep wearing what you want to wear! Someone needs to tell her to just change the channel if she doesn't like what she sees. Being pregnant is a natural, beautiful thing and you are the epitome of that!!!

  151. I don't know if you're even reading these anymore but I came here from HuffPost to just tell you how incredibly in awe I am at you even having to be pregnant on TV. As many have said here, you are so beautiful, bump and all. Honestly she sounds like she is from a time where pregnancy was not as cherished. I live in the mountains of NC and there are elderly people that don't even like to hear the word pregnant. I had many horrible comments made to my face from these people who lost their tact somewhere in life. They all think you should hide until the baby comes out and then you better be looking great the next day. I had one (bigger) elderly lady ask me when my baby was due and I told her she was 6 months old. I really did still look about 4 months pregnant. Most people would feel embarrassed that they asked that question to a non-pregnant person. But no, she continued and asked me follow up questions on why I haven't been able to lose the baby weight. This was all while I was trying to help her at my actual place of employment. It doesn't matter who you are or what you do, if you're pregnant, people think they have some right to comment on your body. I don't understand it - it needs to stop. But even though we know these things shouldn't bother us because really, who are these people to us? They don't have any bearing on our lives. Yet the comments are hard to shake. I think you're doing a fantastic job. I am so happy for you and your husband and for your future child. I know that child will grow up to be a kind human because he'll have a mom help him along to understand the struggle of others.

  158. Laura, I just read about your story in a Huff post article. As a woman who has struggled with body image all my life and four pregnancies (only two full term, live birth), i applaud you for standing up and speaking out against the body shaming. There is not a single reason for you to be anything but happy and proud of the baby growing inside you. I do believe that some people try to hush others or bring others down a notch or two out of envy, out of fear, out of bitterness. I'm so glad you didn't listen!
I may not get to watch your nightly broadcast but you can consider me a very strong supporter! Good luck with the pregnancy and delivery!

  159. I just want to say first that you have a smaller belly than I do, and I'm a male! Don't let one rude person get to you. You have an amazing attitude and a great life ahead of you. Keep being you and you will no doubt inspire those who listen to be better people.

  160. It looks like you don't really need another positive comment here however God bless you for making the sacrifice of carrying a baby. My wife was never prettier than when she was carrying a child. Who knows what your child will do with their life, find a cure for cancer, land on Mars, or be the best mother or father that they can be to their children, all of these things are huge and make a difference in the world.

  161. Sounds like my Grandmother, and something she might say. It's her generation that would saw something like that. Add a little modern technology and she leaves a VM with her opinion. I guess thats how the felt about pregnancy back in the olden days. In some instances they still hid pregnancy from the camera 10 years ago

  162. Laura

Just ran across your story online. I am a 58 year old man with 4 children. I also have 3 grandchildren.

Take if from me - a pregnant woman is beautiful and should never be condemned by anyone or ashamed of having a large belly or anything else misshapen for that fact. You are doing something that no man can ever do and it is one of the most wonderful things on this earth.

Keep your head up and ignore the haters.

I hope all goes well with your pregnancy and you have a healthy happy baby.

PS - We have a local station that has 2 women on the air that are pregnant right now. I think it is wonderful that they are still on the air during their pregnancies. They a beautiful pregnant women just like you.

  164. You look beautiful and happy! With that voicemail-Consider the source. Who takes time out of their day to call and insult someone they don't know, especially someone who is pregnant? Something is obviously wrong with that person.

  166. I just read your story on Facebook. Why people think they have the right to talk so hateful to other people floors me...especially another woman. Having a baby is one of the things that keeps believing in miracles everyday. A miracle of a new life from a mother's body...it is amazing. You are a miracle holder and that makes you one of the most beautiful people in the world. YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL and that old hag can suck it!

  167. Ignore the rude people. You look beautiful and you shouldn't hide your baby bump. I would give anything to have that and have a baby. But unfortunately I'm not able to. Keep your head up.

  168. You are absolutely beautiful!! I am so sorry such a hurtful, negative message made it's way to you. My daughters are 28 and 23 and I still feel like I'm fat and ugly because of comments that were made when I was pregnant. The people who shpuld have been my strongest supporters and loudest cheerleaders...my family and my (former) husband...belittled me and made me feel so unimportant. My daughters are strong and beautiful...but I still question my self-worth every day. Keep sharing your story and showing other women what a strong, self-confident, and smart woman looks like.

  171. You're carrying a new life inside you. If the baby is doing well, and you're doing what the doctors advise, just let the love of God, your family, and friends support you during your pregnancy. Then, we'll raise your long-awaited glass of wine with you in a toast to your newborn son!
